FAQ.

Our spine surgeons provide a variety of care options for all spine needs. We are dedicated to delivering exceptional care and improving the quality of life for our patients, and we are committed to advancing the field of neurosurgery through innovative research and education.

  • Is surgery the only option?
We understand that the idea of having spine surgery can be scary. Wherever possible, our team will offer conservative treatments, including exercise, physical therapy, and lifestyle changes. We use surgery as a last resort when other methods are not relieving your pain. Our surgeons are experts in the field, and use the latest technology and research to ensure that you receive the best treatment available for your individual needs.
  • What are the risks of surgery?
Risks are similar for all types of surgery, but complications are less likely to occur after minimally invasive surgery than open surgery. Nerve damage Bleeding Device failure Pain Allergic reactions or complications from anesthesia Infection
  • What is the difference between endoscopic and open surgery?
Endoscopic surgery is minimally invasive and only requires a small incision. Open surgery is the more traditional type of surgery that requires a large incision and the removal of muscle and/or bone to access the surgical site. Wherever possible, our surgeons elect for the least invasive surgical method possible to treat your condition; however, not all injuries allow for a minimally invasive approach. You can discuss the preferred method of surgery with your surgeon, and ask if a minimally invasive approach is possible.
  • How long does recovery take?
Everyone heals at a different pace, and different types of surgeries may require different healing period. Consult your surgical team to learn more about what to expect.
  • Do I need to make a follow-up appointment with my surgeon?
You should schedule a follow-up appointment four to six weeks after your surgery. During this appointment, you will discuss your healing and recovery, as well as any questions or concerns you may have.
  • How long should I wear a bandage?
You should wear a bandage until the incision has closed and there is not fluid coming from the wound. Bandages should be changed daily with new, dry, sterile gauze.
  • When can I return to my normal activities?
Your activity level will depend on the type of spine surgery you had. For minimally invasive surgeries, you will likely be able to return to normal activity levels within a day or two. For more invasive or open surgeries, you should consult with your surgical team and increase your activity slowly.
  • When can I drive?
Until you can manage your pain without narcotics, you should not drive yourself.
  • When can I return to work?
Your return to work depends on the type of spine surgery you had and the type of work you do. More rigorous jobs after open surgery may require a longer break. You can discuss your return to work with your surgical team.
  • When can I shower or get the incision wet?
We recommend waiting a week after surgery before showering. Initially, you should keep the incision dry with a plastic wrap and pat dry if any moisture finds the incision.
  • What exercises can I do?
Walking is preferred until your surgeon has given the okay for more strenuous exercise.
